FERNANDO COLLOR: O CANDIDATO ESPORTISTA E AS ELEIÇÕES DE 1989

Resumo

Resumo: Em diversos momentos da história republicana no Brasil o esporte foi utilizado para fins políticos. Este artigo se propõe a estudar seus usos na construção da imagem de Fernando Collor de Mello como candidato à presidência da República do Brasil nas eleições de 1989, tomando como fonte de pesquisa edições da Revista Veja publicadas neste contexto. Parte-se da perspectiva da História Cultural em sua conexão com a chamada Nova História Política, enfatizando como essa publicação ajudou a construir a imagem de Collor como um esportista, praticante de natação, lutador de artes marciais, adepto do cooper e, portanto, alguém apto para exercer o cargo por ele almejado. Sabe-se que a grande imprensa participou ativamente dos debates das eleições de 1989 e que a Revista Veja foi um dos maiores expoentes desse momento de redemocratização do Brasil. Utilizando o discurso de que o país precisava de um candidato jovem, moderno e em boa forma física, Veja colaborou para que Collor vencesse as eleições e, assim, coloca-se em prática seu projeto neoliberal. Saber o lugar que o esporte ocupou neste processo é um tema ainda inédito nos estudos históricos. Este artigo demonstra como a Revista Veja associou o candidato Collor ao esporte, ao culto ao corpo e a juventude, apostando nessa tríade como algo que impulsionaria sua candidatura.

Abstract: At different times in republican history in Brazil the sport was used for political purposes. This article aims to examine their uses in building the image of Fernando Collor de Mello as a candidate for President of the Republic of Brazil in the 1989 elections, taking as a source of research issues of the Veja magazine published in this context. It starts from the perspective of cultural history in its connection with the so-called New Political History, emphasizing how this publication helped build Collor's image as a sportsman, swimming practitioner, martial artist, jogging adept and therefore someone fit to hold office for he desired. It is known that the mainstream press has participated actively in the 1989 elections and the debates that Veja magazine was one of the greatest exponents of this moment of re-democratization of Brazil. Using the speech that the country needed a young candidate, modern and in good shape, see collaborated to Collor won the elections and thus puts into practice its neoliberal project. Know the place that sport has held in this process is an unpublished theme in historical studies. This article demonstrates how to Veja magazine associated Collor candidate for the sport, the cult of the body and youth, betting that triad as something that would boost his candidacy.
