Resumo

A partir de reflexões dispersas, encontradas ao longo do tratado Das Verdadeiras e das Falsas Idéias, o presente artigo procura reconstituir as críticas gnosiológicas que Arnauld dirige à doutrina malebranchista das idéias. Trata-se, em especial, de mostrar que as noções de extensão inteligível infinita e de visão em Deus são incapazes de explicar a distinção entre sábios e ignorantes, a passagem da ignorância ao conhecimento de objetos particulares e o progresso do conhecimento humano. Assim, as observações contidas neste artigo procuram mostrar que Arnauld sustenta em seu tratado não apenas que a doutrina de Malebranche não tem o alcance espiritual e religioso que lhe conferia seu autor, mas também que essa doutrina fracassa em dar conta do conhecimento humano e de seus procedimentos.

Abstract

This article tries to reconstitute the gnosiological criticism that Arnauldmakes to the Malebranche´s doctrine of the ideas, from the dispersed reflections found along the treatise Of the True and of the False Ideas. It will be shown, especially, that the notions of infinite intelligible extension and of vision in God are unable of explain the distinction between sages and ignorant, the transition from ignorance to knowledge of particular objects and the progress of human knowledge. Being so, the remarks in this article try to show that Arnauld sustains in his treatise not only that Malebranche's doctrine does not have the spiritual and religious extent granted by his author, but also that this doctrine fails to explain human knowledge and its procedures.
