A noção de significação indeterminada

Abstract

As relações lógicas de subordinação entre conceitos e de instanciação de conceitos por indivíduos são explicadas por Tomás de Aquino através da noção de significação indeterminada, que é tema do presente artigo. Ao longo dessa investigação, desenvolveremos a tese de que essas relações estão fundadas num certo tipo de incompletude representacional característica dos conceitos, de acordo com a qual eles significam seus conteúdos segundo variados graus de determinação. A frutificidade daquela noção é ilustrada por meio de seu uso na elucidação de dois temas clássicos concernentes à relação entre conceitos, a saber, o status do conceito de ente e a unidade apresentada por definições compostas de gêneros e diferenças.

Abstract

The logical relations of subordination between concepts and instantiation of a concept by an individual are explained by Thomas Aquinas through the notion of indeterminate signification, which is the subject of this paper. In the course of this investigation, it will be developed the thesis that these relations are founded in a certain kind of representational incompletude peculiar to concepts, according to which they signify their content in conformity to various degrees of determination. The fruitfulness of that notion is illustrated through its use in the elucidation of two traditional themes concerning relations between concepts, namely, the status of the concept of being and the unity belonging to definitions composed out of genders and specific differences.
