Résumé

In recognition of its 200th anniversary of Independence, this essay reflects on the shaping of the Brazilian state across two centuries. The paper articulates the persistant pull of authortarianism and inequity in competition with the uneven and non-linear pattern of building democracy, citizen participation, and economic equity.
