Xenofonte e sua psicologia da Philotimía

Resumo

No presente artigo defendemos a ideia de que Xenofonte promove um esquema psicológico, a respeito dos governantes, que coloca em primeiro plano a philotimía, o desejo pela honra, de ser honrado e ser elogiado – sobretudo na Ciropédia e no Hierão. Sustentamos que existem dois tipos dephilotimía, uma negativa e uma positiva: a primeira está relacionada com o desejo de ser honrado sem se importar com as consequências, enquanto a segunda está vinculada às consequências das boas ações realizadas para a sociedade. Este último tipo de philotimíaestá marcado pela sophrosyne, uma virtude xenofôntica por excelência. Não obstante, a inovação da perspectiva de Xenofonte está no fato da philotimíapositiva promover, ao mesmo tempo, recompensas ao indivíduo e a sociedade, em um esquema onde o egoísmo e o interesse comunal se retroalimentam.
