Abstract

Since 2013, activists and academics have come together annually at the International Weight Stigma Conference to discuss their productions, which are mostly situated in the field of “fat studies”. These are observations produced by an ethnographic view on the sixth edition in England in 2018, and a follow-up of the event’s hashtag on Twitter. From the dynamics of knowledge production about and from fat bodies, it was possible to observe tensions established by word choices, rethinking of biomedical paradigms about “obesity” from a social justice perspective and the possibility of embrace within the formalities of an academic conference.
