Revisitando a ideia da Commonwealth Bizantina

Dimitri Obolensky marcou profundamente a historiografia sobre os povos eslavos medievais com a publicação de The Byzantine Commonwealth em 1971. Esse livro consolidou, entre bizantinistas, eslavistas e até mesmo medievalistas, a ideia segundo a qual os povos eslavos ortodoxos integravam uma comunidade supranacional subordinada à autoridade política e espiritual de Constantinopla. Tal visão relegou as terras eslavas a mera adjacência do Império Bizantino. O presente artigo, publicado originalmente em inglês em 2004, analisa criticamente essa perspectiva, examinando em especial a forma como Obolensky representa a Rus, ainda que outros elementos da grande teoria de seu livro também sejam discutidos. À luz da bibliografia recente sobre os laços mais amplos da Rus com o Ocidente, bem como da ampla influência bizantina na Europa medieval, torna-se necessária uma reavaliação das relações entre Bizâncio e os povos eslavos, de modo a romper com o mito de que Bizâncio exercia controle político por meio da cultura, uma ideia entrelaçada ao conceito de Obolensky de Commonwealth Bizantina.
