Abstract

Socio-spatial patterns in the city’s
epicenterInvestigating urban form and uses in the
Cultural Corridor of Mossoró/RN
Public leisure spaces provide relief and spontaneous
encounters for the population. Spatial and usage
characteristics can influence the variety and
concentration of people. This article investigates
urban form, diversity of equipment and land uses
with concentration of visitors to three squares in
the Mossoró Cultural Corridor, in Rio Grande do
Norte – a set of spaces for collective leisure. It is
believed that the concentration of visitors, gender
reach and types of public are different because they
are linked to characteristics of the form and distinct
uses. The study scope was limited to the squares
and their immediate surroundings. Land use and
equipment mapping were developed, as well as
behavioral mapping to investigate the concentration
and distribution of people. Results indicate that
one of the sections is limited to the presence of
visitors in the square itself, at a specific time, which
may be linked to less diverse uses and the layout
of equipment. The other squares indicate greater
temporal flexibility, spatial distribution and number
of visitors, with more frequented restaurants and
mixed uses. There is a difference in the territorial
reach of gender, indicating a female preference
for sections with peaceful activities. The findings
validate the hypothesis, pointing out different
audiences linked to spatial and usage characteristics,
facilitating the understanding of urban dynamics
and form.
