Abstract

Archaeology, urbanism, ideology and destruction: the liberation of republican and imperial Rome in the new Italian capital and under Mussolini’s government This article discusses the damage suffered by the urban landscape of Rome, up until the end of the Fascist period, based on the interventions carried out in the name of liberating the archaeological areas remaining from the republican and imperial city: the excavations of the Roman Forum, the liberation of the Campidoglio Hill, the opening of the Via dell’Impero and the excavations of the Imperial Forums.
