Abstract

The origins of the urban form of Pitangui, Minas
Gerais: A morphogenic and territorial analysis
This article focuses on the city of Pitangui, with
origins dating back to the end of the 17th century –
and whose major contributions to the formation of
the center-west of the state of Minas Gerais make
it the matriarch of this region. Despite its historical
relevance as a mining area, settlement, route, and
also a stage for conflicts between paulistas and
non-paulistas miners, the specialized literature lacks
works that discuss its urban formation. In order to
contribute to a better understanding of the colonial
urban landscape of Pitangui, this article studies the
morphogenesis of the ancient settlement, through
the identification of pre-existing infrastructures in
the territory that made the emergence and initial
development of this settlement possible. To carry out
this study, both the concepts of the English School of
Urban Morphology and the territorial approach of
the Italian School were adopted. The morphological
analysis performed made it possible to understand
the relationship between the development of the
territory, the linked routes, the landforms, and the
initial form of occupation. Thus, it is understood that
this study contributes to the preservation actions of
the urban landscape of Pitangui, since it deepens
the relations between it and other historical colonial
landscapes in Minas Gerais.
Keywords: Pitangui; Historical cities; Captaincy of
Minas Gerais; Picada de Goiás; Morphogenic and
territorial Analysis.
