Abstract

Children’s Experiences and the Understanding of
Landscape: Experiences in a Public School in Rio
de Janeiro
The paper addresses the relationship between
the school and the city, exploring the concepts of
Integral Education and Educational Territories with
the aim of “spreading childhood across the city”
as a fundamental approach. The main objective
is to report the application of post-occupancy
evaluation methods in a public school in Rio de
Janeiro, conducted within the Built Environment
and Landscape Evaluation course of PROARQFAU-UFRJ. The study highlights the perspectives of
children and educators on open spaces, based on
the principle that the school should not be confined
within its walls but should actively connect with
the community, recognizing children’s right to the
city. The research underscores the importance of
collaboration among all parties involved so that the
school can effectively engage with the community
and expand its impact beyond its physical
boundaries.
