Abstract

Suitability analysis as a tool for urban planning
In small Brazilian municipalities, in addition to
the social and economic forces that shape the
urban fabric, the lack of administrative structure
and limited resources are additional obstacles
to the existence of resilient, continuous, and
efficient planning. This is the case of Icapuí, a
small coastal city in Ceará that sees its growth
limited by real estate pressure related to tourism
and the expansion of wind farms. In this context,
the work aims to explore the application of a
methodology based on McHarg’s (1995) suitability
analysis, which helps define compatible areas for
the municipality’s sustainable urban expansion.
Data about the municipality were collected,
supplemented by information provided by residents
and community health agents. Using a GIS tool,
the data were spatialized and analyzed, resulting
in a suitability map that identified both more
promising areas for occupation and those that are
less suitable for urban consolidation and expansion.
Although the effectiveness of the method is linked
to the availability and quality of data to represent
territorial dynamics, the developed methodology
shows potential for application in different contexts
and situations, contributing to enabling sustainable
development in other municipalities.
