Resumo

Besides being one of the most significant Latin writers in the first century AD, Seneca played an important role in the polítical life of his time, holding several positions and acting as Nero's counselor. Author of many philosophical works, he dedicated the Emperor the treatise De Clementia in which he draws the picture of an ideal governor. He also used the texts of his tragedies to condemn tyranny and praise the virtues which ought to characterize a good governor: tenderness, smoothness, clemency, kindness, courage and conformity to fortune.
