The present study aims to investigate the history of Archaeology since the early Modern Age in order to determine if the discipline had a linear development or if it was heavily influenced by the general societal conditions. First, we deal with the antiquarian approach and then move on to the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum before discussing the beginnings of scientific Archaeology in the 19th century. We then move on to discuss the multidisciplinary approach in the social sciences during the early 20th century which resulted in the so-called “Socio-Cultural” Archaeology. Finally, we deal with processualism and its postmodern rival, post-processualism. Clearly, it is not a thorough and complete study, but an overview of the discipline.
