Abstract

In this paper I shall survey the refutation of idealism set out in the Fourth Paralogism of the first edition of the Critique of Pure Reason commenting upon each line of argumentation through which Kant attempts to rule out the skeptical doubt regarding the existence of the "things outside us". In this context, I shall firstly argue that Kant clearly distinguishes in this section between epistemological and ontological skepticism, elects the former as his unique opponent in the refuting project and disenfranchises the challenge raised by the latter, which paradoxically characterizes the position of the genuine author of the syllogism of ideality - the Cartesian skeptic. Secondly, I shall defend that by so doing, the refutation of 81 turns out to be, at best, an explanation of why a Kantian idealist cannot be a skeptic regarding external appearances, rather than a demonstration of why a Cartesian idealist cannot be a skeptic regarding external world. Lastly, I shall propose a systematic argument in order to justify the necessity of a less phenomenistic refutation than what turned out to be that of 81, defending that transcendental idealism loses its consistency if it accepts the possibility that the existence of the "things outside us" stricto sensu (i.e., in an ontological sense) remains a mere conceptual or intellectual presupposition, even though a necessary one, instead of a real fact.
