Abstract

The author's purpose in this article is to explore a different Descartes from the one presented by most commentators. In spite of the conventional wisdom, based mostly in Descartes' correspondence with Mersenne, the author presents a Descartes that is able to see, what Galileo and others saw, how mathematics can function in a physical theory.
