Por que Aristóteles escreveu o livro III da EN?

Resumo

O livro III da Ethica Nicomachea contém uma análise de atos voluntários, deliberação, escolha, vontade e daquilo que depende de nós, que se segue à discussão de Aristóteles sobre virtude moral em geral, apresentada nos livros I e II, e é seguida pela investigação detalhada de virtudes particulares, que constitui o restante do livro III, todo o livro IV e todo o livro V. O tema central deste artigo é o exame do argumento de III 1-7 (I-V) tendo como objetivo compreender qual é a posição exata dessa seção na Ética de Aristóteles, sobretudo no que diz respeito ao problema do determinismo.

Abstract

Nicomachean Ethics book III contains an analysis of voluntary acts, deliberation, choice, will and what is up to us, which follows Aristotle's discussion of moral virtue in general, presented in books I and II, and is followed by the detailed investigation of particular virtues, covering the remaining part of book III and the whole books IV and V. The main topic of this paper is to assess the argument of III 1-7 (I-V) in order to understand the exact position this section has in Aristotelian Ethics, specially in what concerns the problem of determinism.
