Significação e não contradição

Resumo

A defesa dita "elênctica" do princípio de não-contradição em MetafísicaΓ4 deve estabelecer seu resultado se o adversário apenas falar algo. A estratégia consiste em mostrar que, ao falar, o adversário já aceitou o princípio. Dada a estrutura do argumento, o único meio de evitar uma petição de princípio é não introduzir na exigência feita ao adversário um compromisso que exceda as condições da mera significação. Em particular, é imperativo evitar qualquer comprometimento com o essencialismo aristotélico. Pode-se propor uma interpretação em conformidade com essa exigência considerando que o ponto central da prova consiste em mostrar que significar algo é delimitar um significado. A simples idéia de diferenciar o que está dentro e o que está fora dos limites estabelecidos para o significado de um discurso de qualquer complexidade é suficiente para mostrar que o falante aceita o princípio de não-contradição. Não é necessário, para tanto, comprometer-se com qualquer descrição particular da realidade. Por outro lado, a extensão desse resultado às condições da predicação irá preparar o caminho para o desenvolvimento da ciência do ser enquanto ser.

Abstract

The so called "elenctic" defense of the principle of non-contradiction in Metaphysics Γ4 will succed if only the opponent will say something. The strategy consists in showing that, in speaking, the opponent has already accepted the principle. Given the structure of the argument, the only way to avoid begging the question is not to ask from the opponent any commitment exceeding the conditions of mere meanigfullness of speech. In particular, it is specially important to avoid any reliance on Aristotelian essentialism. A reading which is in accordance with these requirements will hold that the core of the proof consists in showing that meaning something amounts to singling out a meaning. The mere aim of telling what is within from what is without the bounds imposed on speech of any complexity is enough to show that the speaker accepts the principle of non-contradiction. One is thereby not required to commit oneself to any particular description of reality. Nonetheless, the extention of this result to the conditions of predication will pave the way for the development of the science of being as being.
