Abstract
Abstract
As the title anticipates, this paper intends to return to the old discussion about how Kant stands toward classical metaphysics. Attempting initially to sketch a general outlook of the different positions of his interpreters regarding this issue (1.1), we shall proceed thereafter to an analysis of how the postulates of practical reason -- or what we propose to call a practical knowledge strictu senso (1.2) -- perform a fundamental role in establishing the new kind of metaphysics through which Kant, having grounded morality in human rationality alone (2.1), wants to deal with the old themes -- especially God, soul, and freedom -- without falling neither into dogmatism nor into skepticism (2.2). From this point of view he would be neither a demolisher nor a continuator of the old discipline, but a kind of restorer who attempted to keep from it just that minimum which would be necessary for us, rational beings, to hold to our hope in a moral sense for human existence.
