O que é uma casa heptagonal? Nota acerca do universal aviceniano

Resumo

O objetivo deste artigo é o de clarificar o uso e a origem de um exemplo fornecido por Avicena em sua Metafísica: a casa hepatagonal. Primeiramente, apresentaremos alguns elementos da teoria aviceniana dos universais na qual o exemplo é empregado e lembraremos alguns aspectos importantes dessa teoria no que diz respeito à existência mental dos universais. Em segundo lugar, faremos uma breve indicação dos problemas ligados ao uso desse exemplo e enfatizaremos o modo como alguns intérpretes medievais e modernos tentaram solucioná-los. Em terceiro lugar, procuraremos explicar a razão de Avicena ter concebido aquele exemplo, salientaremos a provável origem do adjetivo 'heptagonal' para, por fim, retirarmos algumas consequências daquele uso.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to clarify the use and the source of an example given by Avicenna in his Metaphysics: the heptagonal house. Firstly, we will present some elements of the Avicennian theory of universals in which the example appears, and remember important aspects of this theory, mainly the ones related to the mental existence of the universals. Secondly, a brief indication of problems connected to the usage of this example will be given with emphasis to the way some medieval and modern interpreters have tried to solve them. Thirdly, we shall explain the purpose of this example focusing on the probable origin of the adjective 'heptagonal', and finally state the consequences of its employment.
