Abstract:

This paper endeavours to offer a positive account of the accidental identity illustrated by "white-man" in Aristotle's Metaphysics Z 6 1031a19-28. The gist of argument lies in the distinction between full or unrestricted identity, on the one hand, and restricted or accidental identity, on the other, so that white-man and to-be-white-man may display the latter case of identity, even if the former one is ruled out. The proposed solution to this issue is examined in connection to the case of the definition of blood, which is expressly compared to that of white-man in De partibus animalium II 3.
