Como Elogiar um Rei Espartano: Distanciando Agesilau de Esparta no Encômio de Xenofonte

No último século as obras de Xenofonte passaram por uma série de revisões, dentre elas as relacionadas à sua visão sobre Esparta. Contudo, enquanto a reavaliação de seus trabalhos históricos e filosóficos revelou um Xenofonte extremamente crítico de instituições e da conduta política espartana, o gênero encomiasta do Agesilau o manteve inexplorado quanto a essa temática. O objetivo desse estudo é mostrar que o encômio não é uma exceção à regra, mas que também contém críticas a Esparta em meio ao conteúdo dos elogios dedicados a Agesilau. Isso é feito pela contextualização desses em meio aos topoi associados a Esparta e aos espartanos durante seu período hegemônico, os mesmos que são denunciados anos a fio por Xenofonte e por outros autores contemporâneos a ele. Argumenta-se que o ateniense não só protege Agesilau desses topoi como também o distancia deles, caracterizando-o como alguém que assume o polo oposto dos comportamentos negativos atribuídos à pólis espartana e seus cidadãos. Dessa forma, é possível não só incluir o Agesilau no desafio da ideia de que Xenofonte era um laconófilo acrítico, mas também ver o encômio como algo cuidadosamente pensado para atingir um objetivo apenas superficialmente simples: compor um elogio de um dos principais responsáveis pelas memórias negativas sobre a hegemonia espartana.
