National identities in process: the Modern Art Week and the Brazil’s Independence Centenary Exhibition

Resumo

Em paralelo à Semana de Arte Moderna, acontecimentos excepcionais de 1922 incluem a derrubada do morro do Castelo no Rio de Janeiro, com a qual também foi promovida a Exposição Internacional do Centenário da Independência do Brasil, posto que parte do terreno que resultou do desmonte foi ocupado por pavilhões dos países convidados. Este texto ressalta a realização da Semana e da Exposição como oportunidade especial para o entendimento da quebra da hegemonia das linguagens estilísticas na arquitetura brasileira. Para tanto, articula algumas das matérias da revista Architectura no Brasil e artigos de reconhecidos autores. A intenção é verificar a importância de exposições e revistas na produção do contexto de cultura em que foi estabelecido o modernismo arquitetural. Instrumentos de formação e divulgação de padrões formais e críticos, tais eventos anunciaram novas categorias e novos usos das práticas tradicionais.

Abstract
Parallel to the Modern Art Week, exceptional events in 1922 include the demolition of Morro do Castelo in Rio de Janeiro, with which the International Exhibition of the Centenary of the Independence of Brazil was also promoted, insofar as part of the land that resulted from the dismantling was occupied by pavilions of the invited countries. It should be added that, among these facts, the first flight to cross the Atlantic to Brazil, the uprising of the Copacabana Fort, the expulsion of Leon Trotsky from the Jewish Church, and the creation of the Communist Party and the National Historical Museum were other events outstanding passives in the same decade. The text displayed here emphasizes that the holding of the Week and the Exhibition constituted a special opportunity for understanding the break in the hegemony of stylistic languages in Brazilian Architecture. To this end, I articulate some of the articles referring to the Exhibition and the neocolonial 'style' published in the magazine Architecture no Brasill and articles by recognized authors regarding the language or “style” of the architecture presented in the Week of 22. The intention, therefore, is to verify the importance of exhibitions and magazines in the production of the cultural context in which architectural modernism was established. Instruments for the formation and dissemination of formal and critical standards, such events announced, at the same time, new categories and new uses for traditional practices.
