Resumo

Neste artigo buscamos compreender as razões para que se instaurasse uma lacuna nas páginas da história da arte brasileira a propósito da I Exposição Nacional de Arte Abstrata, realizada em 1953 no Hotel Quitandinha, na cidade de Petrópolis. A partir das questões históricas da década de 1950, o artigo investiga o cenário da organização e da realização da mostra, os interesses políticos que orientaram o acolhimento das correntes abstratas na arte brasileira no período e o papel desempenhado pela crítica de arte. Para o enfrentamento dessas
questões, recorremos a extensa pesquisa arquivística nos acervos do Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro, da Biblioteca Nacional e no acervo digital de periódicos editados no Rio de Janeiro e em São Paulo, complementada por pesquisa bibliográfica e entrevistas.

Abstract
In this article we seek to understand the reasons for the establishment of a gap in the pages of Brazilian art history regarding the First National Exhibition of Abstract Art, held in 1953 at the Hotel Quitandinha, in the city of Petrópolis. Based on the historical aspects of the 1950s, the  article investigates the setting of the organization and realization of the exhibition, the political interests that guided the reception of abstract tendencies in Brazilian art in the period, and the role played by art critics. To address these issues, we relied on extensive archival research in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, the National Library and the digital collection of periodicals published in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, complemented by bibliographical research and interviews.
