Abstract

This study  aims to analyze, using an Afrocentric epistemological approach, the reception, rupture and impact that the work, Recordações do Escrivão Isaías Caminha, by Lima Barreto had on Brazilian utamawazo (ANI, 1997), an unreflective cultural manifestation of a people. It is therefore a priority to scrutinize Western assumptions about race and racism and how such conceptions affected the criticism of Barrett's production. Furthermore, it shows how Lima Barreto used his critical sense and his militant and resistant writing (BOSI, 2002) to expose the racism of his time, preceding in written form the exemplification of important concepts such as becoming black in Neuza Souza (1983) and cordial racism.
