The objective of the article is to analyze the role played by the South Korean state and its industrial policy between the years 1960-1995 in the development of its national semiconductor industry, more specifically DRAM type memories (Dynamic Random Access Memory). The DRAM industry is technology driven through its whole process. Product design, production, assembly and test involve a high level of technology and investment. The state was fundamental as an entrepreneur, protector and disciplinarian, this allowed the absorption and development of the sophisticated technology necessary for the production of DRAMs. In 1992, Korea was the second largest producer of DRAMs with 24.3 percent of this market.
