Resumo

A partir das novas percepções advindas do campo da História Ambiental, acreditamos que o exemplo fornecido pelos garamantes, grupo étnico líbio que habitava o Fezã entre o início do I milênio a.C. e o VI século d.C., pode ter um valor inestimável para os antiquistas, proporcionando uma reflexão original acerca de uma sociedade que, em pleno Saara, região árida e inóspita, organizou uma entidade política centralizada, gerindo uma sociedade urbana, hierarquizada e complexa, estruturada em torno de uma ampla rede de comércio e de uma exploração agrícola intensiva e com sofisticada tecnologia hidráulica, formando, em última instância, um verdadeiro Estado foggara.

Dr. Belchior Monteiro Lima Neto, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo

Professor Adjunto de História Antiga do Departamento e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (Ufes). Doutor em História pela Ufes e pesquisador do Laboratório de Estudos sobre o Império Romano, Seção ES. Atualmente, executa o projeto História e Arqueologia na África romana: novas perspectivas historiográficas a partir das escavações no Magreb e no Saara, com financiamento da Fapes (Edital Universal n. 28/2022).
