Resumo

More than a conflict centered on arms race between two global superpowers, the Cold War was also a dispute for hearts and minds of populations around the world. In the Latin America case, in the transformative years following the Cuban Revolution, the United States sought to promote an idealized image of national development along capitalist lines so that regional societies would be convinced to remain aligned to the historic hemispheric hegemon. Through economic disbursements and propaganda activities, US actors actively worked to convince Latin Americans of the virtues of North-American development model. The largest regional economy, Brazil was the forefront of these efforts especially in its early years. And even though not much was achieved in the short-term, the legacy this concerted dissemination of liberal (market-led) notions of development is lasting, as demonstrated by recent political events.
