“RAÇA DE GIGANTES” ... DO FUTEBOL! A TRADIÇÃO PAULISTA NAS LETRAS E NA IMPRENSA ESPORTIVA, NOS PRIMEIROS ANOS DO FUTEBOL BRASILEIRO

Resumo

Resumo: Este artigo analisa a invenção de uma "tradição paulista" no universo letrado de São Paulo e a sua reprodução, com base em novos narradores, nas páginas esportivas da imprensa bandeirante, na defesa da superioridade de São Paulo sobre o Rio de Janeiro no desenvolvimento do futebol no Brasil. Essa “tradição” se destinou à fixação de uma identidade paulista, na Primeira República, atendendo às elites locais em seu projeto político de afirmação da hegemonia de São Paulo na história e nos destinos da nação.  Uma hegemonia evocada nas páginas esportivas de Piratininga, em razão dos primeiros encontros futebolísticos envolvendo os selecionados paulista e carioca, promovendo uma pulsante rivalidade regional que tanto marcou os primeiros anos do futebol, nas duas capitais.

“A Race of Giants” ... of Football! The Paulista Tradition in Literature and the Sports Press in the First Years of Brazilian Football

Abstract: This article analyzes the invention of a "Paulista tradition" in the literary universe of São Paulo and its reproduction on the basis of new narrators, in the sports pages of bandeirante press, in defense of the superiority of São Paulo over the Rio de Janeiro in the development of football in Brazil. This "tradition" was intended to set a Paulista identity, in the First Republic, following the local elites in their assertion political project of hegemony of São Paulo in history and the nation's destiny. Hegemony mentioned in the sports pages of Piratininga, because of the first football matches involving the São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro selected by promoting a pulsating regional rivalry that so marked the early years of football in the two capitals.
