O MESTRE ARTUR EMÍDIO DE OLIVEIRA E A DEFESA DA CAPOEIRAGEM ENQUANTO “LUTA NACIONAL”

Resumo

Resumo: Este artigo discute a atuação do mestre baiano Artur Emídio de Oliveira, na década de 1950, como “intelectual mediador” em defesa da capoeira como “luta nacional” e em meio a um contexto de construção de uma nova “representação” para a capoeiragem. A partir de sua atuação é possível perceber o protagonismo dos próprios capoeiras, que além de intervirem no campo da discussão teórica, presente nos jornais e pioneiramente na TV, incorporaram a defesa da capoeiragem enquanto “luta nacional” no campo prático, ao confrontarem outras lutas nos ringues. Deste modo, constatamos que a presença do mestre Artur Emídio neste período no Rio de Janeiro, então capital federal e centro cultural e político do país, realçando  e representando a capoeira nos ringues e na mídia impressa e televisiva foi fundamental para a preservação e expansão desta prática.

MESTRE ARTUR EMÍDIO DE OLIVEIRA AND THE DEFENSE OF CAPOEIRAGEM AS "NATIONAL FIGHT"

Abstract: This article analyzes the performance of mestre Artur Emídio de Oliveira, from Bahia, in the 1950s as an "intellectual mediator" in defense of capoeira as a "national fight" and in the context of the construction of a new "representation" for capoeira. From his performance, it is possible to perceive the protagonism of the capoeiras themselves, who in addition to acting in the field of theoretical discussion, present in the newspapers and pioneering in TV, incorporated the defense of capoeiragem as a "national fight" in the practical field, when confronting other combat fights in the ring. In this way, we verified that the presence of the mestre Artur Emídio in this period in Rio de Janeiro, then the federal capital of Brazil and cultural and political center of the country, highlighting and representing capoeira in the ring and in the press and television media was fundamental for the preservation and expansion of this practice.
