COLONIALISMO, GERMANISMO E SOCIEDADES DE GINÁSTICA NO SUDOESTE AFRICANO

Resumo

Resumo: Durante o colonialismo alemão no sudoeste africano (atual Namíbia), várias associações contribuíram na formação de um campo esportivo. Entre elas, destacaram-se as sociedades de ginástica (Turnvereine), especialmente aquelas de Swakopmund, Windhoek, Lüderitzbucht e Keetmanshoop. A ginástica fez parte dos fundamentos da cultura física na Alemanha do II Reich e se tornou uma prática esportiva recomendada aos corpos expostos aos rigores mesológicos do continente africano. Também serviu como treinamento à população varonil (militar e civil), num contexto colonial, isto é, de beligerância. Essas sociedades esportivas foram também importantes ao fomento do germanismo. Apesar do apartidarismo político e religioso de seus estatutos, as sociedades de ginástica no sudoeste africano foram espaços sociais onde se propagaram algumas ideologias. Com base em fontes hemerográficas da colônia alemã do sudoeste africano, o presente artigo trata do protagonismo das sociedades de ginástica para a formação do campo esportivo, para a manutenção e propagação do germanismo e para a estruturação de um calendário esportivo nos quais os torneios eram também momentos de celebração do colonialismo.

COLONIALISM, GERMANISM AND GYMNASTIC SOCIETIES IN NAMIBIA

Abstract: During the German colonial rule in South West Africa (now Namibia), several associations were important for the building of a sports field. Among them may be mentioned the gymnastic societies (Turnvereine), especially those of Swakopmund, Windhoek, Keetmanshoop and Lüderitzbucht. The gymnastic was part of the bodybuilding culture in German Second Reich. Sport was recommended to health of the bodies exposed to the climate rigors of the African continent. It also served as training for the manly population (military and civilian), in colonial context, in other words, belligerent context. These sports societies were also important to the development of Germanism Overseas. Despite the political and religious non-partisanship of their bylaws, the gymnastic societies in South West Africa were social spaces where ideologies were spread. Based on newspapers and other sources, this article examines the protagonist role of the gymnastic societies for the building of a sports field, for the maintenance and spread of Germanism and for the structuring of a sports calendar in which the sporting events were also moments of celebration of colonialism.
