O ENREDO DA VITÓRIA -- SELEÇÃO BRASILEIRA DE FUTEBOL E IDENTIDADE NACIONAL (1950-1970)

Resumo: O presente artigo objetiva tratar da concepção de identidade nacional, propagada pelo círculo de jornalistas influenciados por Gilberto Freyre, bem como identificar os fomentadores desse enredo que, baseado nas vitórias e derrotas da seleção brasileira de futebol, permanece até a atualidade. O fim da década de 1950 foi um momento não só de forte intervenção do Estado e de um aparato intelectual legitimando um ideário de brasilidade, como também de consolidação do futebol enquanto um esporte de massa, cuja maior expressão encontrou-se na "trágica" derrota do selecionado nacional na Copa de 1950 e nas vitórias em 58 e 62, contando com um anticlímax no Mundial de 66 e desfecho heroico na Copa de 70, situações narradas na crônica esportiva, sobretudo. Nesse sentido, tendo em vista a necessidade de recorrer ao uso da literatura como fonte histórica, contou-se com a análise de crônicas, pautada no referencial de Antonio Candido.

THE PLOT OF VICTORY: BRAZILIAN FOOTBALL NATIONAL TEAM AND NATIONAL IDENTITY (1950-1970)

Abstract: This paper focus on the conception of national identity, disseminated by journalists which were influenced by Gilberto Freyre, and it also aims to identify the developers of this plot, that was based on victories and defeats of the Brazilian football team and still remains nowadays. The final years of 1950´s represented not only a strong state intervention and an intellectual apparatus legitimizing an idea about "Brazilianess", but also the consolidation of football as a mass sport, whose highest expression took place in the "tragic" defeat of Brazilian football team in the World Cup of 1950 and in the victories of 1958 and 1962, with an anticlimax in the 1966 Championship and the heroic outcome of 1970. These situations were narrated in the sports chronicle, specially. Accordingly to this, and knowing the need of using literature (sports chronicles) as a historical source, the analysis was based on the theory of Antonio Candido.
