"AS MULHERES FORTES SÃO AQUELAS QUE FAZEM UMA RAÇA FORTE": ESPORTE, EUGENIA E NACIONALISMO NO BRASIL NO INÍCIO DO SÉCULO XX

Resumo

Resumo: Fundamentada na abordagem teórico-metodológica da história cultural e nos estudos de gênero, este artigo discute a importância atribuída ao esporte na política de fortalecimento da população brasileira branca no início do século XX. Evidencia, sobretudo, que para essa política se efetivar foi necessário investir no fortalecimento do corpo feminino, pois segundo os ideais nacionalistas em voga naquele momento, somente um corpo forte poderia gerar uma raça forte. Traduzem-se como fontes primárias desta pesquisa, documentos produzidos neste período, bem como as 88 edições da primeira revista cientifica específica da área da educação física. Através da técnica da análise de conteúdo foi possível compreender que o discurso nacionalista brasileiro, ao buscar o refinamento da raça, fez a apologia da saúde da mulher branca identificando a atividade física como a melhor forma de fortalecê-la e aprimorá-la.

"STRONG WOMEN ARE THOSE WHO MAKE STRONG RACE": SPORT, EUGENICS AND NATIONALISM IN BRAZIL IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY

Abstract: Based on the theoretical-methodological approach of cultural history and in gender studies, this paper discusses the importance given to sports in the domestic policy of strengthening the Brazilian white population in the beginning of the 20th century. In order to analyze the role occupied by sport in this process, I have analyzed many sources of research, moreover, the 88 issues of the first physical education and sports journal. Making use of the technique of content analysis, it was possible to understand that the Brazilian nationalist discourse, by searching the refinement of the race, defended white beauty, and, therefore, identified women's body as the most important instrument for the obtainment of this, identifying in sports the main means of educating women's body, strengthening it, and perfecting it.
