Abstract

An artist-teacher’s letter, admirative of Paulo Freire and Ana Mae Barbosa, in which, along with excerpts from these authors and others (such as Barthes, Bondía, Lopes, and Guattari), reflects on Brazilian education, the construction of subjectivity and autonomy, the legacy of authoritarianism, and some challenges for meaningful experiences in schools in the 21st century. The artist-teacher poses questions and shares affective thoughts with the recipients, defending the power of expanded use of letters in the process of understanding “who am I” and “who are we, Brazilian educators.” The writing can also be read as a kind of witness to educational and artistic processes, offering a first-person reflection aimed at teachers, artists, and readers interested in the dialogue between art, education, and politics, in a course that intertwines the private/public and personal/professional dimensions, in an inside-outside direction.
