Abstract

The article is divided into three parts; at first it presents the context of the artistic experiment Grande Reinauguração da Cantina (The Grand Reopening of the Cantina, 2024), carried out by the class of Topics in Contemporary Art 2, from the course of visual arts at UFRN. This site specific project proposes a one-day reopening of a social space that had been abandoned for over four years. Subsequently, it addresses the teaching methodology that led to the idealization of the canteen-artwork, in particular, the study of Nicolas Bourriaud’s Relational aesthetics; the counterpoints discussed by art critic Claire Bishop; and the emphasis on relational artworks by Latin American artists. Finally, it presents the analysis and development of action, and proposes a reflection on the artists’ role as a provocateur and transfigurator of reality, and on the arts course as a laboratory for artistic experiments.
