Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify correlates of and analyze variations in voter abstention rates in the State of Rio de Janeiro across elections held under two different political regimess the first, in 1962, took place during a period characterized by political institutions and practices which closely resembled those of politicai pluralism and the second, in 1974, under an authoritarian regime.
