Eça de Queiroz revisits a recurring theme in the most diverse literary records of all time when he creates Gonçalo Mendes Ramires as a character: the desire for power and/or public recognition, a theme that, as a matter of fact, is part of the history of humanity. This thematic discussion is also present in other novels by Queiroz, such as The Relic (1887), for example. In those terms, it is worth observing the strategies employed by the subjects to make this ambition come true. An evident resource in A ilustre casa de Ramires (1900) is the character’s attempt to enter the literary world, but it is also important to analyze the strategies of micro power expressed by this character’s arguments of authority. Therefore, the aim of this article is to analyze the arguments of authority employed by the protagonist of the novel, often disguised as good deeds, in addition to seeking to contextualize the mechanisms of power that serve as a backdrop for the choices of actions.
