Abstract

In this dialog with professor Carlos Reis, Eça de Queirós, the “universal and transhistorical” Portuguese writer, and his characters become participants in these literary and socio-cultural inquiries, which unfold in a careful reading of the ways in which we currently relate to literature and its authors, and to the world in which we exist. From an academic perspective, research topics privileged by Reis are discussed, which go beyond his own extensive studies on Queirós, Saramago, or Neorealism. As this interview attests, the profound interest in intermediality is here to stay, which proves that, as far as Carlos Reis is concerned, his “Last Lesson” will never in fact be the last.
