The Hermits’ Love in the Antoniad by Maffeo Vegio

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the depiction of love in the Renaissance epic Antoniad by Maffeo Vegio. In the work, the epic tale of love between the hero and his beloved is transformed into a platonic bond between two hermits – Saint Paul and Saint Anthony. The spiritual love of the hermits reflects Divine love and attests to their sanctity. This portrayal of the hermits’ love partly arises from the Christian reinterpretation of the epic genre, which viewed the Aeneid as a path to virtue. However, the description of the relationship between the monks includes substantial imagery borrowed from love elegy. The Antoniad also draws on medieval readings of Virgil’s work as a story of Aeneas’ romantic love for Dido. Vegio thus reinterprets the epic genre in the spirit of Christian humanism, creating a hagiographic epic tailored to the sensibilities of his time.

Mariusz Plago. Doutor, filólogo clássico, professor assistente no Instituto de Estudos Clássicos, Mediterrâneos e Orientais. Seus interesses de pesquisa se concentram na poesia épica romana do período augustano e do Império, particularmente em Guerra Civil de Lucano, bem como no tema da guerra civil na literatura romana. Ele também explora a literatura neolatina e a recepção da antiguidade na literatura moderna, com foco principal nos períodos renascentista e barroco. Ele é coautor de Maffeo Vegio i jego Antoniada (Maffeo Vegio e sua Antoniada; com Elżbieta Górka; Varsóvia, 2024) e coeditor de Ars Recusandi. Odmowa jako zabieg literacki w tekstach greckich i łacińskich od starożytności do końca XVIII wieku (Ars Recusandi. A recusa como recurso literário em textos gregos e latinos da antiguidade até o final do século XVIII; com Ałła Brzozowska; Varsóvia, 2022).

Elżbieta Górka, University of Wrocław Wrocław, Poland

Elżbieta Górka possui mestrado em Filologia Clássica e Psicologia e concluiu seu doutorado em Estudos Literários com uma tese especializada em literatura neolatina. Atualmente, ela desenvolve dois projetos de pesquisa: um explorando épicas hagiográficas renascentistas e outro examinando relatos de viagens jesuítas para a China. Seus interesses de pesquisa abrangem poesia polonesa e italiana dos séculos XV e XVI, glotodidática e a representação de transtornos mentais em textos culturais contemporâneos. Ela publicou vários artigos sobre literatura neolatina e foi coautora de um livro sobre Antonias de Maffeo Vegio (Maffeo Vegio i jego Antoniada [Maffeo Vegio e sua Antoniada]; com Mariusz Plago; Varsóvia, 2024). Em reconhecimento às suas realizações, ela recebeu uma bolsa de estudos da Fundação para a Ciência Polonesa (FNP) para jovens pesquisadores.
