Continuidade na lógica de Leibniz

Abstract

O princípio de continuidade desempenha um papel fundamental no cálculo infinitesimal desenvolvido por Leibniz, na medida em que é com base nele que Leibniz pretende justificar as operações que constituem aquele cálculo. Algumas dificuldades se erguem, contudo, quando se trata de apresentar as condições de justificação do princípio, e essas dificuldades têm exposto o cálculo leibniziano à crítica, já desde a época de sua publicação. Neste artigo, pretendo examinar o princípio de continuidade, bem como as condições de sua aplicação no cálculo infinitesimal, à luz de alguns aspectos da linguagem formal elaborada por Leibniz visando averiguar se e em que medida o princípio pode ser justificável com base na lógica leibniziana.

Abstract

The principle of continuity plays an important role in the infinitesimal calculus developed by Leibniz, since it is by appealing to it that Leibniz intends to justify the operations which constitute the calculus. Some difficulties arise, however, when we ask for the conditions by which the principle could be justified, and these difficulties have often exposed leibnizian calculus to criticism. In this paper I intend to examine the principle of continuity, as well as the conditions of its application in the calculus, in the light of some aspects of formal language developed by Leibniz, in order to evaluate whether, and to what extent, the principle can be justified on the basis of the logic of Leibniz.
