Abstract:
In this paper I discuss some aspects of the so-called "Frege's Problem", which was originally formulated for identity-statements. I first try to give it the most general form. Next I try to show that both the formulation of the problem, as well as Frege's solution for it, are themselves problematic. A radical alternative to these problems would be to embrace Kripke's and Kaplan's views that identity statements express necessary propositions that might be known a posteriori. In the last section I consider Casullo's (1977) objection to Kripke's examples of necessary a posteriori truths, and argue that it is unsuccessful if we take a radical interpretation of the contingency associated with necessary propositions (one that Kripke himself might not be willing to embrace).
