Women who heal: ritualistic knowledge about the use of herbs prayers and faith healers from Miguel Pereira, RJ

Abstract

No Brasil a prática da reza e do benzimento envolve conhecimentos herdados pela linha familiar feminina e mescla-se num  sincretismo religioso. Mulheres com diferentes origens reconhecem em si mesmas o dom de curar pelas rezas e pelas plantas sagradas, exercendo, assim, sua fé e caridade para com o próximo. O objetivo deste estudo foi inventariar as plantas ritualísticas utilizadas pelas rezadeiras e benzedeiras de Miguel Pereira no contexto religioso de matriz africana, especialmente na umbanda, e apontar as espécies-chave bioculturais, descrevendo suas propriedades simbólicas. O município de Miguel Pereira localiza-se no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, na região do Vale do Paraíba do Sul, conhecido como Vale do Café.

Abstract
In Brazil, the practice of prayer and blessing is a legacy of female ancestry and mix in a religious syncretism. Women with different origins recognize that have the gift of healing through prayers and sacred plants, thus exercising their faith and benevolence with other people. The objective of this study was to inventory the ritualistic plants used by the prayers and faith healers of Miguel Pereira in the religious context of African origin, especially in Umbanda, and also to point out the key biocultural species, describing the
symbolic properties of these plants. The municipality of Miguel Pereira in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in a region known as Vale do Paraíba do Sul or Vale do Café.
