The Essay of Eduardo Lourenço: Approximations to a Practice

Authors

Abstract

The objective of this text is to consider that Eduardo Lourenço’s essays inherit a practice of Camonian “experimentation” – understanding that “an heir is not just someone who receives”, but “one who chooses”; and that “his inheritance naturally consists of the interpretation and choices of what is inherited, promoting a kind of mobility of alliances” (Derrida, Roudinesco, 2004, p. 17). We also try to reflect on a possible work of self-gnosis undertaken by essayism, seeking the relationships between society and literature based on what Lourenço postulates as a conflicting relationship between the images – literary or not – forged and manipulated to constitute the identity of a society and the incessant counter-image movements (excursions) launched by literature.
