Abstract

Many transformations have been occurring within the distribution of economic, military and political powers in the international system, which leads to a realignment of the national strategies. Besides the role of great powers in this changing world, this article analyzes de role of the emergent powers – South Africa, Brazil, China, India and Russia. By adopting a historical perspective it’s possible to visualize great system’s tendencies, since its formation until its near future. The article is organized in historical periods and in different geographical zones used to analyze the exercise of regional and world power facing new constraints and opportunities created by the international system in the present historical period.
