Resumo

Until few years ago, the situation of Greek peasantry used to receive scarce attention, since the historians privileged the study of slavery, although it was known that the bulk of population had continued subsisting from their own work on the land, i.e., outside of the slave system. This was understandable since a widespread vision existed that the ancient world was based on the exploitation of slaves. Peasant studies were relegated to second plane. But new historical studies have produced substantial changes in our understanding of the Hellenic rural history, and require a systematic disposition of acquired knowledge arid a different formulation of the questions to be studied. This article intends to carry out an analysis, combining the historical readings with the methodological ones. We aim to approach diverse aspects related with the rural world in the ancient Greece according to new points of view, analyzing the specific forms of peasantry's so-cial, economic and cultural life and its relationships with the political sphere and military activity of the Greek city-state.
