Keywords:
Wagner's law, cointegrationAbstract
The present paper aims to assess the validity of Wagner's law for the Brazilian economy during the period 1948-1993, by making use of cointegration techniques. The paper's main contribution related to the consideration of different categories of government expenditure, namely consumption, investment, and transfer payments. The results indicate that there is no support for Wagner's law regarding any of those categories, nor can it be supported when public expenditures are considered as a whole.Downloads
