Regional economic resilience and import shocks
Abstract
The objective of this research is to estimate the employment multiplier of imports following the studies by Moretti, Wang and Chanda, and to identify the resilience of Brazilian micro-regions to this negative trade shock. The regional results of this shock allow identifying which regions were less, or more, affected by imports, which is interpreted as regions that present more, or less, resilience. This research innovates in the use of spatial econometric models to observe the effects that imports have on formal employment in Brazilian regions. Employment was divided by technological intensity, following the division proposed by Macedo and Monastério. The results indicate that imports had a negative impact on employment, but only in medium and low technology ones. When high technology goods are imported, an increase in the number of jobs was observed.
