Special Feature: 90 Years of Theotonio dos Santos. Call of Papers

November 11, 2026, will mark the 90th anniversary of Theotonio dos Santos’s birth. Reoriente is taking this opportunity to promote a debate on the author’s work, inviting interested parties to submit articles for a special issue on his thought. A prominent Marxist thinker and one of the architects of dependency theory, Theotonio linked it to world-system analysis, conceiving it from the 1990s onward as the first stage in the construction of a Marxist theory of the world-system. He left behind a seminal body of work distinguished by its articulation of different levels of analysis and a wide range of topics covering, among other issues, dependency; imperialism; the development of the productive forces; the big cycles; the world economy; critiques of neoliberalism and Keynesianism; the decline of the United States; China’s rise; the BRICS; the construction of a multipolar world; socialism as an experience and a utopia, and the strategies and tactics of the Revolution; state capitalismo; and fascism, as well as their specific manifestations in Latin America.

We propose that the dossier include, as its main themes, the author’s contributions on the following topics:

1) An assessment of dependency theory in the third decade of the 21st century: concepts, debates, and advances. Where we stand, how far we have come, and what remains to be done;

2) Toward a Marxist theory of the world-system: connections between Marxist dependency theory and world-system analyses;

3) The theory of imperialism and the thesis of the decline of the United States as a hegemonic and imperial power;

4) The scientific and technological revolution and its role in the transformations of the contemporary world;

5) Kondratiev cycles, technological paradigms, and the global economy;

6) The economic and political cycles of dependency;

7) Marxism and the strategies and tactics of the transition to socialism: the 20th and 21st centuries;

8) The rise of China and the renewal of socialism;

9) The role of the BRICS and Latin American integration in building a multipolar world;

10) Neoliberalism, state capitalism, and socialism in the 21st century;

11) Fascism: concept, long-term history, and its resurgence as a threat to Latin America and humanity in the 21st century;

12) Limits and possibilities of the progressive cycle in Latin America and Brazil
