ABSTRACT:

This article aims to present and discuss the contributions of Bernard Williams regarding the pluralism of values and the conflict between freedom and equality. First, the structure of value concepts proposed by Williams is presented. Then the constructions of liberty and equality as political values are investigated and the notion of 'resentment', which Williams uses to give meaning to the pluralism of values, is introduced. Following, one of his criticisms of Ronald Dworkin's reconciliatory answer to the conflict of values, namely that it does not take political opposition seriously, is critically appraised.
