Resumo: Raymond Chandler, um estilista da literatura que reproduziu a vida americana em sua forma mais crua, possui um lugar único na literatura, parte da cultura de massa e da cultura modernista, seu detetive Philip Marlowe, incorporando a heroica figura do detetive americano, aparece pela primeira vez em The Big Sleep, de 1939, revelando um mundo de decadência do american way of life. Uma personagem profundamente pessimista e irônica que, narrando sua própria trajetória, quebra a barreira entre a ficção popular e a alta literatura, desta forma, Chandler penetra no panteão dos grandes autores do século XX. Chandler não apenas reconfigura todo o gênero ao qual pertence, como também ultrapassa o estereótipo e introduz problemáticas inéditas. Suas personagens desoladas revelam o vazio existencial do pós-guerra, enquanto tentam se apegar desesperadamente à materialidade do capitalismo, estes personagens são atraídos para um vácuo, uma ausência transcendental. Abstract: Raymond Chandler, a literary stylist who has reproduced American life in its crudest form, has a unique place in literature, part of mass culture and modernist culture, his detective Philip Marlowe, incorporating the heroic figure of the American detective, appears for the first time in The Big Sleep, 1939, revealing a world of decadence of the American way of life.  A deeply pessimistic and ironic character who, narrating his own trajectory, breaks the barrier between popular fiction and high literature, in this way Chandler penetrates in the pantheon of the great authors of the twentieth century. Chandler not only reconfigures the whole genre to which he belongs, but also transcends the stereotype and introduces unprecedented problems. His desolated characters reveal the existential emptiness of the postwar, as they try to cling desperately to the materiality of capitalism, these characters are drawn into a vacuum, a transcendental absence. In Raymond Chandler, the hard-boyled becomes the metaphysical mystery.
